Petersen International, one of the correspondents to Lloyd's of London, has an good program that is easy to apply for and has the backing of a well respected company. It is specifically designed for people like students traveling abroad who are residents of the US.

You can read more about travel insurance here:

Hello,

I travel with Projects Abroad to Mexico and Nepal, i saw my money reflected when i got food poisoned and had to be taken straight to hospital, the Nepalese staff took care of everything, hospitals, doctors, insurance, my parents, etc. depending on your perspective can be expensive or reasonable, having backup while you're away is priceless.

Good luck!

<a href="">Julio</a>

Like Jayne said, that's probably reasonable... but I wouldn't spend it. There are organizations out there that also place in Ghana for a lot less. If you're there for medicine, check out Doctors Without Borders. You don't have to be a doctor, but you can go with them and they cover your expenses including a monthly stipend.

Also, check out Global Volunteer Network. You can go to Ghana and other countries in Africa (or around the world) and work in medicine, HIV/AIDS, etc, and it's MUCH less. They have reputable programs for a very good price. (I did a LOT of research on this.) I would advise checking them out (type them into google) and seeing if there's something that looks good through them. The prices are less than half that of Projects Abroad.

<a href="">Gladys</a>

It probably also covers translators, security, staff to supervise and support you in your service, staff time to liaison with local authorities and officials, and staff time to train you for doing whatever it is you are going to do.

So, believe it or not, yes, that's a reasonable cost to place, supervise and support an unskilled volunteer abroad. Just be sure that you *really* are going to get all this for your money.

Compare this program with the listing of the more-than-30 member organizations of the International Volunteers Program Association (IVPA); this is a good place to find reputable volunteer-for-a-fee programs:

<a href="">Leo</a>

Emergency medicine is a medical specialty in which a physician receives practical training to provide patients with acute illnesses or injuries which require immediate medical attention. While not usually providing long-term or continuing care, emergency medicine physicians diagnose a variety of illnesses and undertake acute interventions to stabilize the patient. Emergency medicine physicians practice in hospital emergency departments, in the pre-hospital setting via emergency medical service and other locations where initial medical treatment of illness takes place. Just as clinicians operate by immediacy rules under large emergency systems, emergency practitioners aim to diagnose emergent conditions and stabilize the patient for definitive care.

Urgent Care Centers are often staffed by physicians, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners who may or may not be formally trained in emergency medicine. They offer primary care treatment to patients who desire or require immediate care, but who do not reach the acuity that requires care in an emergency department or admission to a hospital.

You can obtain a list of urgent care providers in a specific area by using our Find an Urgent Care Provider tool. Just enter a zip code in the tool and you are given a list of urgent care walk in clinics and the distance in miles from the zip code. If you use our advanced search, you can narrow down the list by providing a radius limit.

Take care as always

EMTALA Law - Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act

Look into it.

Any individual who comes to a hospital requesting an examination or treatment for a medical condition must receive an appropriate medical screening examination within the capability of the hospital's Emergency Department.

<a href="">Bessie</a>

Yeah you definitely need some type of insurance going over to Africa. Most insurance carriers don't cover you once you leave the U.S.For example, Our family went over to Prague and my dad got a real bad stomach virus from eating some bad chicken while we were there. He had to remain in the hospital for a number of days and if it had not been for them we would still be paying on those bills and my dad may not have made it .. so you may wanna try them out!!

I would definately get it if I were you. If you dont have Medical insurance that would cover you anywhere you should look into it. I know that CSA Travel protection covers upto 50,000 in medical expenses and 250,000 for emergency medical transportation. I have used them in the past. I didnt have to file a claim but I hear they are really good company to use. They have a website or call @ 1-800-873-9855
